On 25 September 2008 the general meeting of CNC U.A. agreed to a participation of 50% in the Polish compost producer Holpol. In the long run CNC Grondstoffen B.V. can take over the company at Gósciejewo entirely. With this participation CNC enforced its position in the European raw materials market for the cultivation of mushrooms.

Holpol Compost Sp. z o.o. was founded in 2000. At the moment the company is producing 34,000 tonnes of full-grown compost for the cultivation of mushrooms a year. At the modern industrial estate at Gósciejewo, west of Poznan, there are 8 compost bunkers for phase 1 and 19 tunnels for phase 2 and 3 compost. The workforce is 46 FTE. Holpol exclusively uses straw for composting; horse manure is no longer used.

Hopol is an attractive take-over candidate for CNC Grondstoffen B.V. in several respects. First, the company has space to expand. Second, CNC Grondstoffen B.V. has a number of clients in the west of Poland, so the market in which Holpol is active, is familiar.

The company is partly led by the management of CNC Grondstoffen B.V. and partly by the management Holpol International Holding B.V.

Spreading of risks is an important underlying reason for the take-over in Poland. It decreases the dependence on the Dutch market. Internationalisation provides stability and continuity in the operational management of CNC Grondstoffen B.V. The choice to take over a Polish company is obvious because Poland is the country in Europe which produces most mushrooms. Apart from that,  Polish growers are in great need of high-quality compost which cannot always be provided locally. This makes Poland an interesting and lucrative market for compost. Obviously, one of the agreements at the take-over is direct control of production technique and quality control.
